Darren Crompton becomes interim head coach

Weston-super-Mare rugby club has reacted after a disappointing start to their National Three South campaign with head coach Steve Worrall and backs coach Jon Bamsey leaving as senior coaches.

Jon will however retain his position as the head coach of the U15s.

Former England prop Darren Crompton, who joined Weston in the summer as player/forwards coach, will become interim head coach with assistant coach Chris Hurd initially also taking on more responsibilities.

Worrall joined Weston in 2011 having been assistant director of rugby with the Royal Air Force while Bamsey was a centre with the Seasiders before joining Bath in 1986.

Weston won just eleven of their 26 league matches last season and have been defeated in six of their seven starts this season to leave them one place off the foot of the league table.

"The committee decided on Sunday afternoon that we needed make changes to the coaching staff so that we can turn round our season as quickly as possible," said chairman of rugby Gavin Simpson.

"Both Steve, initially as joint head coach with Paul Redman, and Jon have been great servants of the club for a number of years and we want to thank them for that and wish them good luck for the future.

"We have an important home game on Saturday against Old Redcliffians who have also had a poor start of their season and last season the honours were shared. We will review the progress over the coming weeks before appointing a permanent head coach and backs coach."

Crompton began his professional career with Bath in 1993, before moving to Bristol in 1999 after a spell at Richmond. He has played for England U16s', captained the U18's and the U21s, as well as one senior cap in 2007 against in South Africa.

Last season Crompton was scrum coach with London Welsh when their gained promotion to the Aviva Premiership before taking up a similar post with Plymouth Albion which he combined with his role at Weston.
