Weston super Mare Rugby Club chosen by the Rugby Football Union to be a recipient of one of their Transforming Social Spaces Grants.

Rugby Union in the town received a major boost today when Weston super Mare Rugby Club was chosen by the Rugby Football Union to be a recipient of one of our Transforming Social Spaces Grants.
Weston has been chosen as a recipient of a Lead Up & Legacy Transforming Social Spaces grant strengthening the partnership between the RFU and Club.

Club Chairman Barry Sparks said “We are delighted that our project has been chosen as a recipient for a Transforming Social Spaces Grant. We will now have some of the best facilities in the area that local people from Weston super Mare and the surrounding area can use. The 2015 Rugby World Cup inspired a new wave of people of all ages to become involved in rugby and this RFU investment will help our club to be even better equipped to welcome the newcomers.”

The grant will enhance the club’s social facilities and provide a resource to be used by the local community.

England 2015 provided rugby union with a platform to grow participation across all areas of the game and the RFU has committed a £10m investment which will create a network of over 500 Legacy Centres aimed at providing a platform on which club rugby participation throughout England can be built.

RFU Area Facilities Manager, Jon Bendle commented “The new social space will improve the quality of the rugby experience for everyone using the site and provide more playing opportunities, especially for local people in the 14-24 age-group.”

“This investment will also support the club’s financial sustainability and will create a lasting legacy for rugby union in the community. The project will focus on the club entrance, lounge bar and current skittle alley turning the latter into a new meeting room and dining area and will help the club raise its profile and encourage more players, volunteers and spectators to share the special values that distinguish the sport.”

Cllr Mrs Felicity Baker, Exec Member for Leisure, North Somerset Council in response said that “This investment by the RFU is excellent news. Weston super Mare Rugby Club has an enthusiastic group of hard-working volunteers and this funding will enable them to do even more for young people in the community in the future.”

Work will commence immediately in order that the new facilities are up and running ahead of the new season.
