Weston RFC sign Glenn Dickson

Following their relegation from National 3 South West, Weston RFC has announced a serious statement of intent by securing the services of Fly Half Glenn Dickson as a Player/Head Coach on a 2-year deal.

Dickson 28, born in Dunedin, New Zealand, can count Super Rugby franchise the Highlanders and English Premiership league leaders Northampton Saints as previous employers. Injuries at unfortunate times in his career have hampered his sustained success at the very top level, but any professional rugby’s loss is Weston’s gain as they look to rebuild for next season and beyond.

“The potential of this club is absolutely huge” says Dickson, “I’m really excited to get going with my role, and working with what is already a very talented group of players”

This will be Dickson’s second stint at Weston RFC following a decisive playing role in 2010, which culminated in Dickson kicking Weston to Somerset Cup glory. His affiliation with the club from that time, has made his decision to return on a full time basis very easy.

“My move to Weston in 2010 was the catalyst for me playing at the highest levels of World rugby. People like current club captain George Sparks, have become like brothers to me, and in fact every member of the club have made my wife and I extremely welcome.”

Dickson is under no illusion as to the clubs current plight, and has set his sights high as to where he believes a club of Weston’s size should be.

“As a club we were very disappointed to be relegated this year. I have every belief that, with full respect to our opposition, with hard work and commitment, we will reach our potential next year.”

Weston’s President John Brentnall, cannot emphasis enough the impact of the signing for the club, but also for the community as a whole, “This signing is wonderful news for our club. Glenn is still more than capable of playing Premiership rugby, and is an exceptional coach. I am sure with Glenn at the helm we will achieve our targets. We hope also that Glenn’s expertise can be utilised throughout the local area at colleges, schools, and summer camps.”

Weston rugby club cater for players of all ages and standards. The Mini and Junior team section covers all ages from U6’s – U17s, with the Seniors having 3 sides and a Colts team. Glenn will be involved in coaching throughout all facets of the club, so next season is a very exciting time to join.

This signing is the first step for Weston RFC’s plans for next year, and is part of a short and long term plan for the future of the club.
