Seasiders recover from atrocious start

After only 10 minutes, Weston were 19 points down following the most abject period of rugby most supporters have ever had the misfortune to witness. Tackles were missed, dummies were bought and possession was gifted to a lively Chippenham side which has returned to Nat 3 Rugby following promotion last season.

The carnage started after 3 minutes when flanker Turner was ushered untouched through a gaping midfield for a try under the posts which Taylor converted.

Visiting scrum half Bennett was yellow carded three minutes later as he was deemed to have deliberately knocked on another Chippenham foray and the hosts took rapid advantage of their extra man. Lyons ran through a non existent defence for a second try and Kirby scored a scrappy effort following forward pressure for a score which Taylor again converted.

The home crowd was euphoric….unused to such riches. The away supporters desperately seeking somewhere to hide. Incredibly, Chippenham were not to trouble the scoreboard again as Weston set about reducing the deficit.

The forwards exerted domination over their opponents which was to become critical as the match progressed. Mackay slotted penalties after 19 and 22 minutes and two minutes later, the pack stole one against the head from a scrum near the opposition line for Bennett to put Wright over for a simple score. Mackay converted to close to 13-19, and reduced the arrears further with his third penalty after 34 minutes.
The recovery was completed just before half time when Sprague outpaced the defence to touch down Youngs’ astute chip ahead. Once again Mackay converted for the visitors to lead 23-19.

The second half did not bring the expected onslaught from Weston as strange decision making and hesitancy coupled with committed defence from the home side resulted in only two further tries.

Pressure from the pack created the opportunity for Mackay to touch down in the corner, and on 63 minutes, Sprague cut a fine line from thirty metres to score his second which was converted to complete the scoring.
Chippenham rallied and won a scrum on the Weston line, but once again they were pushed off their own ball and the opportunity was lost.

Weston team…Young, Sprague, Wright, Gallagher, Watkins, Mackay, Bennett (Reid), Swann (Truscott), Withers, Donegan, Board (Eaton), Russell, Hobbs, Rudkin, Sparks.
