Last minute despair
The last kick of the match gives Winscombe the spoils.
Winscombe 2nds came visiting the Rec knowing a good result would keep them in the hunt and spoil the hosts chances at the same time. Weston started brightly, the first 10 minutes being played in the Winscombe half, but the visitors weathered the storm and within 15 minutes had gone ahead with a penalty. Two minutes later Mark Walker
, standing in at prop for the first time since Under 13s dived over for Dan Prime
to slot over the conversion, order seemed to have been restored. But the visitors were not bowed and came straight back to add a converted try leading for the 20 minutes to half time, 7 - 10.
The second started as the first finished, big hits and open play, 10 minutes in and Mark Walker
drove over but the Referee surprisingly gave held up. Weston were in the ascendancy and on 20 minutes Darran Burns
sold 2 dummies to slide into the Vistors try zone, the conversion was denied. A penalty kick on 30 minutes crept over the bar, Dan Prime
another 3 points, Weston 15 - 10 up. With only minutes to go Winscombe broke through to add 5 points with a try, 15 apiece seemed to be the final score, but hands in at the ruck gave a last minute chance just outside the 22 and Winscombe gratefully accepted. The final whistle and 18 -15 to the visitors when a draw seemed the fair result. Jason Bristow
was named Man of the Match, good work to cover and help snuff out dangerous attacks.
