Another tight finish
By Paul Burns
A big strong Somerton keep this game alive to the end!
Somerton were out warming up, stretching and practicing moves well before Weston, they were taking this fixture VERY seriously.
The home side were on the attack from KO and forced a scrum on the Somerton 5 metre line, moved quickly down the line with Fullback Darran Burns to slip through the defensive line to score the first try on 3 minutes, conversion missed. The visitors eased themselves back into the game and forced an unconverted try of their own on 14 mins, and when Pj Grimes gave Dan Prime an easy conversion on 22 minutes it looked like the hosts would put on the style, but a penalty conversion 2 minutes later kept Somerton in touch. But Weston pressure saw Ashley Tucker pounce on a mistake on the half hour and Marc Prime add a fourth try just before the break, Dan Prime converting both. 26 points to 8 points at Half Time was a healthy scoreline.
The riot act read by the 4 visiting coaches worked, Somerton came out on the attack, fresh legs and a tactical move to bring the big second rows into the back line meant the away side broke through the tiring Weston backs, a try for 5 valuable points. Dan Prime cancelled this out when he slipped through the defence for a try of his own, but missing the kick. 2 tries, one converted, came from sustained pressure and pushed Somerton to within 6 points of the Home side quarter of an hour to go. This was hard graft to keep out sustained pressure from Somerton but Weston tactics kept the Visitors in their own half, great defence was required on occasions but Weston turned on the class and kept things tight, not allowing Somerton to find a weakness and they held on for a fine win against a strong side.
Tries: Darran Burns, Pj Grimes, Ashley Tucker, Marc Prime, Dan Prime.
Conversions: Dan Prime x3
