Bristol Rugby Academy U15s play Somerset Academy U15s

News item by Kenny Braidwood

Three players from the Weston-super-Mare under 15 squad represented Somerset RFU on Friday 6 January in a competitive match against Bristol Schools at Hornets RFC.

Lewis Paterson (fullback), Andy Turner (prop) and Euan Braidwood (lock) all made positive contributions to the game which was played under the lights on the new 3G pitch at the Nest. All three boys are part of the Bristol Academy Player Development Group (PDG) along with their team mate Kyron Pearce who had to sit out the match due to injury.

The pitch and constant drizzle meant that there were a few early mistakes in the game and it took a bit of time for the teams to put some phases together. Somerset dominated the first half with the pack being especially dominant. Lewis Paterson scored one of Somerset’s three first half tries following good progress down the left wing.

A number of changes were made to both teams at half time and in the second half Bristol Schools gradually gained control of the game and with the final play of the game scored the match winning try and conversion to bring the final score to Somerset RFU 17 – 19 Bristol Schools.

The Weston players acquitted themselves very well and were a credit to their club and the County in what was a very close game which despite the conditions allowed both teams to show their developing rugby skills.
