Weston 102 -12 Old Patesians

Weston were led out by Ash Russell, able to celebrate his 350th appearance for the first team at Cleve a week ago with a home game. Next out was popular player coach Glenn Dickson who had earlier in the week announced that he would be returning to his home city of Dunedin to take up his dream job. On a perfect afternoon and a flat and excellent playing surface Weston wanted to celebrate and to give Glenn a great send off in his final home game. Old Patesians, who were already consigned to relegation before the match started put up good resistance and never gave up, tackling as hard as anyone would expect from a proud Gloucestershire side, but they were outgunned, outplayed, and outclassed in every department as Weston ran in 16 tries to record their highest ever first team score at the Recreation Ground.
Fittingly it was Glenn Dickson who opened the scoring after just 2 minutes with Weston’s second attacking move. From there on it was pretty much one way traffic with the Weston forwards in control and the backs too fast and skilful for the struggling visitors from Cheltenham.
Weston reached a bonus point inside 15 minutes and reached 50 with less than half an hour gone. Understandably they began to take more risks and Old Pats were able to seize a speculative long pass and ran in an interception try. Coincidentally it had been Dickson who threw the pass and he was yellow carded for contact with the attacker’s head as he tried to slap the ball from his grasp. Quite the afternoon for Dickson who only needed a red card to get a clean sweep!! Astie scored and the Old Pats try was converted by Raymond.
Weston scored another and then the spirited Old Pats team put together a decent run of phases whilst Weston were down to 14 men, and hooker Goggins was on hand to touch down an unconverted try.
Normal service was resumed as Talbot crossed the line for his second of the half and Weston turned round 67 -12 in front. It is believed that this is a record first half score for Weston.
After the break Weston were a little slow of the mark but ran in 6 more tries to bring their tally to 16. Dickson took some of the conversions and passed 100 conversions for Weston on a memorable afternoon which saw Glenn Dickson, Robbie MacKay and Brad Talbot get hat tricks . Marcus Nel and Harry Jones bagged a brace each and there were tries for Kadin Brocks, Tom Sugg and for George Bamsey who scored his first for the club as well as making his first start for the first team. James MacKay had kicked 7 conversions and the Weston final score is a club record and is also believed to be a league record for South West Premier.
In their last three games Weston have scored 233 points and conceded just 29. This haul and the bonus point win lifts Weston to 7th place in the league with two games left to play. Weston have also chalked up the second highest points for tally in the league, only being topped by runaway leaders Bournemouth.
