Weston gain bonus point victory

After last weeks super performance at the Rec Weston travelled to Devon with renewed confidence but they knew that Ivybridge unbeaten at home on their artificial pitch would be a tough nut to crack.
In fact for the first twenty five minutes the game remained scoreless until Weston up until then had their fair share of defending to do finally opened the scoring through prolific number eight Brad Talbot who fought his way over after the hosts had conceded a series of penalties near their own line.
Fly half Dan Lomax missed the conversion but was successful five minutes later when blindside Jacob Cox crossed after another sustained period of pressure. Ivybridge hit back with a converted try of their own near half time.
The game opened up after the break with the hosts cutting the lead to two points with a penalty before Weston scored a beauty rounded off by Huw Morgan after a sweeping fifteen man move that went almost the length of the pitch. Lomax converted expertly from the right hand touch line.
Ten minutes later right wing Alex Howman scored another fine effort which Lomax also did well to add the extras.
Weston looked like they were going to complete a comfortable victory but Ivybridge hit back with two tries in quick succession to leave themselves only four points adrift but when the Ivybridge winger attempted to take a high ball scrum half Ross Bennett was on hand to pull Weston away once more. Lomax couldn’t convert this one but did add three points to even up an Ivybridge penalty soon after Bennett’s try.
The hosts had a chance to gain a losing bonus point on the stroke of time but missed a very kickable penalty to leave Weston with a nine point victory.
Although not at their flowing best there was plenty to admire in the tenacity and never say die attitude of the players with Dan Spelman playing out of position at lock epitomising the desire.
Talbot was once again to the fore and Cox’s tackling was of the highest order. Props Sam Coles and Ollie Streeter were willing work horses and scrum half Bennett fitted in well on his premier excursion with the first team this season.
Lomax was once again assured and Nel and Morgan combative and dangerous in the centre as was full back Robbie Mackay.
All in all a good day at the office.
