WESTON got their season back on track with this nine-try demolition of bottom club Old Centralians, but they took some time to get into their stride.

In fact, they were two points adrift at the end of the opening quarter, the visitors replying to James Mackay’s penalty with a try by their full-back Lewis May. But by the interval, Weston were well in command at 27-8.

In the 27th minute, referee Mike Hudson yellow carded Old Boys flanker Dan Knapman and from the penalty scrum, No 8 Tom Main touched down. It was Main’s first try for the senior team.

Mackay converted and the fly-half was soon making the break and converting wing Matthew Watkins’ try.

Centralians replied with Connor Gwilliams’ penalty, but Weston went further ahead with a powerful charge by replacement Phil Hobbs which resulted in a try for hooker Craig Withers.

Mackay’s third conversion followed and just on the break, scrum-half Dan Waldon dropped a goal and it was Waldon’s grubber down the line and Hobbs’ assistance which provided a second try for Withers, his fifth of the season.

Mackay was on target again with the conversion and in the 55th minute he converted a penalty try after the visitors had offended close to their own line.

Replacement wing Tom Bellek was next on the scoresheet and Mackay’s sixth conversion took him to 100 points for the season.

By this time Centralians were a spent force and full-back Harvey Skelton took full advantage with a brace of tries and wing Harry Jones, now at scrum-half instead of the injured Waldon, scored the Seasiders’ ninth try for Mackay to finish things off with his eighth conversion, and his 19th point of the match.

Weston: H Skelton, J Jones, S Smee, S Edwards, M Watkins, J Mackay, D Waldon, D Price, C Withers, D Swann (c), A Glen, D Bufton, A Russell, S Fisher, T Main. Replacements used: P Hobbs, T Bellek, A Godfrey.

This was a much-improved performance by Weston, but they will need to be even better on Saturday when they travel to Newton Abbot.
