Match report by Tony Russell

A bad day for Weston as the Reds extracted revenge for the earlier season defeat, running away with things in the second half against a severely depleted visiting side which made a good fist of things for the first forty minutes and actually led at half time, albeit by only one point.
The visitors took an early 6-0 lead when Jack Skelton, operating at fly-half and who did well, kicked penalties after two and seven minutes and so it stayed for twenty minutes until the Reds scrum –half found a huge gap to snipe over from close range. They took the lead five minutes later when winger Bird, a refugee from Old Patesians, went over for the first of his three tries. Weston retook the lead three minutes later when the hard working Bufton forced a way over following concerted forward pressure to bring up a narrow 11-10 lead for the visitors.
The home side opened the scoring after only three minutes with a second try, just like the first, from their scrum-half to retake the lead at 15-11. Fortunately for Weston, kicker Groves could find neither his distance nor his direction and helped to keep the score down. It could have been 50 points for Reds but Groves went on to miss nine of his ten pots at goal! Thank you for small mercies!
The match remained competitive, with Weston enjoying their share of possession, but chances were wasted, overlaps were ignored and try opportunities were butchered. The difference between the sides was that the Bristol side used its’ possession to greater effect. Flanker Davies scored a messy try on fifty minutes to increase the lead to 20-11 and then Bird scored twice in five minutes with a combination of good speed and woeful defence for a 32-11 lead (yes there was a conversion!).
There was one final hurrah for the Reds on full time….scorer unknown. By this time the writer had lost interest !
Weston face Bracknell at home on Saturday next. N.B. It’s a 2.30 kick off. All teams suffer from unavailabilities due to injury, but the team is going through a particularly bad time at the moment and will look forward to the return of the wounded.
Weston team….Bennett, Mackay R., Middlemiss (Jones), Edwards, Watkins, Skelton J. Smee, Swann, Withers, Price (Donegan), Bufton, Hudson (Hunt), Pullen, Sparks, Cox.
