Weston gain much needed victory

Weston duly put the record straight after the game at Worcester on November 30th. last year, where they had unexpectedly and inexplicably lost, and which really sticks in the throat. On that occasion the Weston pack had totally destroyed the opposition pack, which had got away with standing up ALL AFTERNOON, with no penalising from the referee. Nothing has changed and the pack once again butchered the Worcester pack, although the visitors do possess a lively back division, particularly their clever little no. 12, which is capable of playing at this level, and which kept them in the game until the last twenty minutes.
The two sides produced an entertaining 12 try extravaganza on a lovely afternoon for running rugby, in front of a good crowd, swelled by strangely garbed opposition supporters wending their way back from a junior match at “Bridgy.” The writer enjoyed a pint of Thatchers with Spiderman after the match.
The home side was ahead after only two minutes. Excellent support play amongst the forwards created a try for flanker Morrissey. Young converted with a splendid kick from the touchline. The lead was increased six minutes later when concerted pressure on the Worcester line yielded a try for Edwards, (in a welcome return to fitness.)
Parity ruled for the next ten minutes, but after 20 minutes, and a rare Worcester foray to home territory, captain Swann was invited to take a ten minute sojourn in the bin. Worcester took advantage of their numerical superiority. This time, their scrum did not stand up or wheel, and No.8 Cook was given the benefit of the doubt for a touchdown, although he will know he dropped it on the line…and two minutes later, good back play resulted in a second Worcester score for Whitehead, which was converted. 12-12 and game on!
Swann returned. Normal service was resumed as the forwards scattered the opposition for Prop forward Hobbs to touch down.
Worcester retrenched. They built an attack to within 15 metres of the Weston line. The home side pushed them off their own ball to dispel the danger. The two open side flankers remained in situ, grappling on the floor, and amazingly, the Worcester physio joined the game, trying to separate the protagonists. As expected, other forwards joined in for a bout of handbags and powder puffs. What a relief that the young lady was not flattened by a Hobbs or a Swann cruising back to the fray! What on earth was she doing there?!...although perversely, certain away supporters saw nothing wrong with her intervention. Midlands laws or just madness?
Mercifully the ref blew for half time. There was more activity amongst the spectators than there was on the pitch.
The visitors opened the second half scoring with a close range try from wing forward Gunther….unconverted. Place kicking was not a strong suit for either side with only four successful kicks all afternoon, although there was a tricky breeze. 17-17, but equality lasted only five minutes. Morrissey drove over for his second following more forward pressure, and on 67 minutes, Edwards shot across at full pace, untouched from fifteen metres as Morris and Meadows fought to get out of the way of the rampaging centre. 27-17. The visitors mounted an attack. Morrissey was awarded a yellow card for an illegal intervention, and for the second time the enemy made their numbers count and their backs got them back into the game with a score from Meadows, converted by Thomas Briggs to close to 27-24.
Weston responded three minutes later. There was a series of scrums on the Worcester line. Their scrum buckled, wheeled and collapsed, (with no yellow card), and finally No. 8 Bufton (in another combative and abrasive performance) had the luxury of touching down without having to brush anyone aside. Young converted. 34-24.
With a couple of minutes remaining, the game was finally put to bed when second row Hunt got on the back of yet another driving maul to touch down. 39-24 became 39-29 as the visitors got a very late score.
