Weston crowned Champions in Bristol Combination cup victory

Weston picked up some silverware as they won the Bristol Combination Cup beating South Gloucester side Thornbury in an entertaining game held at Dings new ground in Bristol on Thursday night.
Weston took control of the early exchanges and worked their way up field. Brad Talbot touched down the first try of the night following good work by both forwards and backs. Glenn Dickson got the conversion. However Weston were not going to have it all their own way and Thornbury played with great energy and determination. A missed tackle allowed them behind Weston’s defence and a long pass saw the ball stick winger Glew's hands as he was put away to score in the corner. The conversion attempt was missed and so Weston stayed in front.
Weston withstood a period of pressure and then broke free and again it was Talbot who touched down for his second try. Dickson converted to widen the gap.
Against the run of play Thornbury pounced on a handling error and Ogilvie finished the attack as he scored a second try for Thornbury. This time it was the post which prevented the conversion attempt going over, but Wood made no mistake six minutes later when he slotted a penalty for a ruck infringement by Weston and Thornbury were within touching distance of Weston, behind by just a single point.
Weston redressed the balance with a storming attack and Charlie Brabham picked up the ball at the base of a ruck and dashed through a gap in the defence to score under the posts. Dickson converted and the sides turned round with Weston holding a 13-21 lead.
With the wind at their backs in the second half Weston applied great pressure and credit to the Thornbury players who tackled for all they were worth but Weston were not to be denied and Rich Bignell dived over after a sustained attack. Dickson’s conversion from in front of the posts was a formality.
Once again Thornbury struck back as their fullback Richardson produced great skills as he weaved a path through Weston’s defence. Wood converted and Thornbury had hopes of a resurgence.
Weston’s superior skills and fitness were displayed in full for the next 20 minutes and they scored three terrific tries with some exceptionally accurate passing . Dickson, Harry Jones and Cameron Maslen finished off the moves and Dickson maintained a 100% kicking display converting all the tries.
Thornbury had the last word as Richardson and Wood combined to stretch the Weston defence and Wood touched down and converted.
Weston had won the cup for the first time in their history and were deservedly champions. Thornbury earned plenty of praise for their determination and both teams had provided an entertaining event typical of cup rugby.
