Weston narrowly failed to beat promotion chasing a Burnham in this close derby encounter but will be rueing their missed opportunities when the basics when needed were not forthcoming. Burnham play a very effective forward oriented game with veteran fly half Tim Piper pulling the strings and using his boot accurately. Weston for the first half tried to match them but their only score came when Archie Tilsley converted left wing Matt Watkins fine effort. Burnham has opened the scoring in the tenth minute through a Will Hopkins effort converted by Piper. Watkins effort evened up the score but the visitors took a comfortable lead when Piper concerted efforts by Sams Lewis and Wall after several forward drives. Stefan Pearce then scored another which Piper converted to put Burnham almost out of sight. However the second half was a different affair with Weston throwing caution to the wind and hitting back with tries by top try scorer Mike McCarthy openside flanker Billy Kirk and impressive centre Cameron Maslen. Tilsley missed one conversion and at the end of the game that was the difference. An exciting night but ultimately Weston should feel that with a bit more accuracy they perhaps could and should have gained a victory.
