Weston-super-Mare Rugby Football Club held a celebration dinner to mark its 150th Anniversary on Friday, May 15, where the guest speakers were The Rt Hon The Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare and former Weston-super-Mare, Bath, England and British & Irish Lions forward Nigel Redman.

Throughout the 2025/26 season, which saw the 1stXV finish unbeaten and promoted to Regional 1 Tribute Ale South West, the club’s Past Players Association have been selling tickets for the 150th Anniversary Draw to raise funds to support the Club’s activities.

The prize was a five-night holiday for four people in a luxury suite at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe, with transfers and excursions included, which was very generously donated by Ross Kennedy, Director of Victoria Falls Safari Lodge.

Lord Archer drew the winning ticket, which went to Louise Hughes, who unfortunately was not at the dinner, so she was delighted to find out she had won when contacted by the draw organisers.

“My thanks for the incredible news that I have won the amazing Zimbabwe safari holiday at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and £1,000 towards the air fares,” said Louise

“I am still in complete shock and speechless! Thank you, Weston-super-Mare Rugby Club and many congratulations on your 150th anniversary.”

Chris Millard, chairman of the Weston-super-Mare Past Players Association, presented Louise and her husband Ian with the prize holiday voucher.

“The Club is very grateful to Ross Kennedy for generously donating the prize to support the Club in celebrating its 150th year of rugby in Weston-super-Mare,” said Chris.
