Weston 1stXV remain third in National Three South West

Weston-super-Mare 1stXV ran in seven tries in their 46-3 victory on the artificial pitch at Maidenhead and the victory keeps the Seasiders in the hunt to challenge the top two sides as the league programme takes a break over the Festive period.

The home side that took the lead in the opening minutes with a penalty from the boot of fly-half Mike Virgo. But the visitors came back with tries from centre Sam Smee, wing Marco Oupoh and prop Dave Swann with fly-half James Mackay adding two conversions.

Mackay increased Weston’s 19-3 interval lead with a penalty before he added the extras to tries from scrum half Dan Waldron and flanker George Sparks. Lock Ash Russell was the next to cross the whitewash with full back Ross Bennett completing the scoring.

Exmouth’s reign at the top of the National Three South West table was short-lived when they were beaten 22-15 by Devon rivals Newton Abbot at Rackerhayes and they only secured a loosing bonus point thanks to a late converted try.

London Irish Wild Geese have regained the top spot after their 24-20 win at Malvern with Exmouth now three points adrift and weston another three behind but one point clear of fourth placed Newton Abbot.

Redingensians won 24-7 at home to Barnstaple but Avonmouth Old Boys had to settle for a loosing bonus point as they were beaten 20-16 at Amersham & Chiltern. Brixham’s game at Oxford Harlequins and Old Patesians home match against Chippenham were both postponed.
