A charity rugby match was held at the Recreation Ground in Weston last Sunday between Weston Rugby and a combined Bristol & Moseley Old Boys XV. The event was to raise money for the Bristol Children’s Hospital Grand Appeal and the Wales & West Acute Transport for Children, in memory of Weston player Richie Bignell’s young son Lance who passed away in tragic circumstances earlier this year.

The main game was preceded by some mini and junior matches with children as young as 6 running around enjoying themselves.

A large crowd were entertained by a couple of celebrity guests who turned up to help make the day a memorable one.

One of the Gromit statues from Bristol’s famous trails was on site and in demand for many photo opportunities, thank you to Yate Supplies for letting him stay with us for the day he was a big hit with everyone.

We also saw the RFU’s and Worlds best rugby referee Wayne Barnes take charge of the main game. As expected the game was a feast of running rugby in which Wayne contributed with a couple of drop goals and a break from a quickly taken line out which led to the Bristol & Moseley team scoring a well worked try. The final score of 84 all, was testament to both teams and the officials playing an open free flowing entertaining game.

Richie Bignell made an appearance and scored for both teams in an emotional day for the family who were all involved in raising the profile of the very worthwhile charities.

The whole day was a great fun, with kiddie’s rides, face painting, design a Gromit competition, live music from Steve Mitchell and off course the rugby, all of which helped raise the fantastic sum of £5k.
