Weston XV beat Winscombe to reach the Somerset Cup Finals

Weston put an end to Winscombe’s giant killing cup run in a business like, rather than spectacular fashion at a sunny, but chilly Yatton, although the Somerset Premier side earned copious praise for its’ doggedness and willingness to run the ball at opponents who play three leagues higher.
The writing was on the wall in the first minute when the Weston forwards, with apparent ease, shunted their opponents backwards fifteen yards, only for Fry to miss the chance by opting to pick up two metres short instead of waiting for the scrum to inevitably trundle over the line.

Young kicked a penalty after 10 minutes of non stop attack, and sterling defence by the villagers and then Winscombe, on their first visit to Weston territory, scored an excellent and surprising try when their centre Howells cut a fine line through a static defence to give his colleague a simple run in. The try was converted and the supporters deliriously happy.

Another upset on the cards? No! Their euphoria lasted all of five minutes. Weston retook the lead when Fry made amends, crossing untouched from a 5 yard scrum which Young improved, and five minutes later, scored a second when receiving the final pass for a run in on the left wing.
Howells kicked a penalty on the half hour but Weston scored twice in four minutes to bring up a 25-10 scoreline at half time.

Winscombe full back Gregory got himself into a mess and Sean Bennett narrowly beat Daryl Sanft to the touchdown, and then Middlemiss had an uninterrupted thirty yard sprint to the line after Sanft and Crichton had created the overlap.

Two minutes into the second half, Hobbs scored Weston’s fifth try, improved by Young. Howells kicked his second penalty, and Bennett scored his second, once again converted. Both sides made numerous changes but Winscombe were still struggling at the set piece and lineout and Crichton ran in two late tries through a tiring midfield for a final scoreline of 53-13.

Weston will play Bristol Harlequins, who surprisingly beat Clevedon in the other semi-final. Date and venue yet to be decided.
