Weston battle to bonus point in adversity

With twelve players unavailable due to a variety of reasons for the trip to South Devon it was always going to be a voyage of hope rather than expectation. The hope seemed to have vanished after only seven minutes when not only had Brixham scored two converted tries through porous defence but added to this hooker Josh Mynett had to leave the field with a muscle tear leaving veteran prop Steve Donegan to complete the rest of the match. Brixham went on to score two further tries before Weston rolled up their sleeves to have the final say on the stroke of half-time when impressive number eight A J Hussell crossed from a pushover. Fly half Archie Tilsley adding the extras.
This late first half effort definitely lifted the visitors spirits and although Brixham opened the second half with another converted try Weston hit back with a fine try by wing Dominic Marshall following great work by fellow wing Hayden Main and some powerful forward drives. The try was expertly converted by Tilsley from wide out.
Weston's increased momentum was held up when cornerstone of the pack Ollie Streeter finally succumbed to a muscle injury sustained very early on and this resulted in the up to now effective scrums being forcibly changed to uncontested ones. Coach David Burge took this opportunity to remove the tiring Donegan and Weston cut the lead further when Main who had a fine game in the circumstances chased his own kick to outpace the covering defence to cross for an excellent try. Tilsley again doing well to add the extras.
Brixham who had so dominated the first half were not the same team in the second but were still able to add to their score with two fine converted tries putting them out of sight but Weston's young inexperienced side never gave up and the bonus point try arrived when captain Tom Sugg tapped and went on the stroke of time to force his way over. Tilsley again adding the conversion.
Weston can take great heart from this battling performance and they achieved their first point of the season which in the months to come may prove crucial.
