Weston-Super-Mare eased any relegation fears they may have had as they run in six tries, to take a bonus point, in their 54-24 victory over Cheltenham Tigers at the Prince of Wales Stadium.

It was the first time this season that the Seasiders have passed fifty points as they condemn Cheltenham to eighth home defeat of the season leaving them six points from safety with five games to play.

Weston cruised to a 24-5 interval lead after tries from tighthead prop Steve Donegan, and wingers Paul Sprague and Steve Thompson with fly-half James Mackay converted all three to add to his second minute penalty.

Cheltenham scored their only points of the half on the half hour through a try from Worcester Academy second row Nile Dacres who made three senior games for the Warriors this season.

Mackay landed a second penalty shortly after the interval but then saw openside flanker Richard Bignall yellow carded allowing the visitors to score two quick tries.

Joe Garner crossed for the first with left wing James Whybrow, another Warriors Academy player with senior experience, with fly-half Michael Wilcox converting the second.

On the hour loosehead prop Dave Swann went over for Weston's bonus point try with Mackay adding the extras and his third penalty only for scrum half Ben Hough to pull one back for the home side.

The bonus point try was again converted by Wilcox but Weston were to score another 17 points in the final ten minutes with Mackay converting his own touchdown before adding his fourth penalty.

Just before the final whistle Bignall crossed for Weston's sixth try with Mackay converting to keep a clean sheet for the afternoon and take his tally for in the game to 29 points.

Weston-super-Mare have a re-arranged match against Cheltenham Tigers at the Prince of Wales Stadium with the home side seven points from safety but just two places below the Seasiders in what is a must win game for both sides.

In the home game Weston won a close encounter 30-27, after a late penalty from fly-half Matt Fotheringham, where Cheltenham probably felt they deserved more after a good performance.

Lock Andy Glen will lead the Seasiders as skipper George Sparks is unavailable with Jamie Rudkin deputises at blindside flanker while centre Jon Gallagher returns from injury replacing Matt Burns.

"This is another must win game for Weston if they are to avoid being dragged into the relegation battle," said chirman of rugby Mark Philp.

"Cheltenham are in that battle and need a victory to close the gap and give themselves a chance of survival. We will definitely not under estimate them and the challenge ahead.

"Our whole season has revolved around what if’s, what if we had played for 80 mins, what if we had held on to the ball near the line, what if we had not given that try away, what if we had won another five games, but we haven’t and we need to start doing so.

"Our league position probably does not reflect our actual ability as we have pushed everyone close excepting Hartpury, but we have to turn some of the good work into results and we have to learn to put points on the board when we have the ascendancy.

"Cheltenham have always been a tough team to beat up there and I am in no doubt that nothing will change on Sat, we have to concentrate on playing our game and if we put in a good performance then we have every chance of achieving a victory."

Hamish Wrafter and Mark Whitney swop places for Cheltenham with Wrafter going to inside centre and Whitney to teh left wing while Ben Hough returns at scrum half so Jason Graham goes to the bench.

Nile Dacres replaces James Clutterbuck in the second row, Joe Garner moves to No.8, James Comber goes to blindside flanker with Tom Lait replacing Ben Allman at openside flanker.

Cheltenham Tigers (home v Weston-super-Mare, 2.30pm): Adam Pickford; Richard Morris, Hamish Wrafter, Mark Whitney, James Whybrow; Michael Wilcox, Ben Hough; Stephen Moore, Ben Stew, Jacob Leonard-Walters, Phil Leibbrandt, Nile Dacres, James Comber (capt), Tom Lait, Joe Garner.
