For the second game running Weston clutched defeat from the jaws of victory with a bewildering display at Barracks Lane.
It all started so well with Weston taking the lead in the seventh minute after full back Ross Bennett had produced a long kick upfield which led to a lineout in the hosts twenty metre area. Great work by lock Shaun Eaton and prop Ollie Streeter led to fly half Glenn Dickson cutting back in before releasing right wing Chris Young to go over. Dickson converting. They increased their lead in the sixteenth minute when centre Kirk Middlemiss gathered and the ball was played upfield through the hands. Young cut in form the right and produced a reverse pass to put other centre Harry Jones over for a well taken score which was again converted by Dickson. Avonmouth reduced the lead ten minutes later with a penalty and added to that when a long range effort resulted in a converted try. However Weston looked to have increased their lead on the stroke of half time when they drove over from a lineout only to have the score somewhat surprisingly disallowed.
The second half again started well for Weston when in the forty sixth minute Weston increased their lead to eleven points following a delightful show and go by Jones ended with him going in under the posts with Dickson again converting.
The hosts hit back with a converted try after Weston failed to gather a high ball but soon after the visitors squandered several chances before Dickson added a penalty .
Weston should have been out of sight but after the ref seemed to have called last play Weston inexplicably kept the ball in play only to give it away for Avonmouth to run through several missed tackles and missed opportunities to kick the ball off to score under the posts which was converted to give the hosts a very unlikely victory. Credit to the home side for keeping going throughout and in the end their pack began to dominate the breakdown area
Westons game control and decision making needs to improve massively if hopes of bouncing back to the National League straight away are to be realised.
