Strong second half performance sees Seasiders win at Teignmouth

Weston travelled to South Devon for their first league fixture ever with Teignmouth and came away with a hard fought victory which went to the wire.

Weston took the lead in the sixth minute after a sustained period of pressure led to a Dan Lomax penalty.

Teignmouth hit back in the twelfth minute when a forward drive and some woeful tackling enabled them to score try which they enlarged upon ten minutes later with an almost identical score which this time was converted.

Weston regrouped and with prop Ollie Streeter beginning to have an influence on the game with some storming runs it was his front row partner Mike Hocking who snuck round the blindside after a fine catch and drive. Lomax missed the conversion but atoned for this soon after when a Teignmouth high kick was gathered and replacement wing Matt Watkins crossed after a fine passage of play. This gave Weston a three point advantage and from the kick off captain George Sparks claimed the ball and sent centre Robbie Mackay off on a mazy run which led to livewire replacement flanker Rich Johnston scoring on the stroke of half time.

Weston started the second half with good intentions of running the ball but with space in front of them Teignmouth intercepted to cut the lead to three points and eight minutes later the home sides left wing cut in from the blind side to score under the posts after a powerful run for a converted try to put the hosts four points up.

Weston soon restored the lead when centre Harry Jones cut loose and fed left wing Ollie Caton who evaded a few would be tacklers before putting Chris Young away for yet another try in a lucrative season for the winger. A Lomax penalty increased Westons lead before an extraordinary drop goal by the Teignmouth centre cut Westons lead to one point. Weston were hanging on but to be fair they dug in and eventually their class told when Sparks found some pace to out run the Teignmouth defence and go over under the posts to enable an easy conversion for Lomax.

A relieved Weston then for whom Streeter and Sparks had fine games and the early introduction of replacements Phil Hobbs along with Johnston and Watkins certainly had an effect, as Weston moved up to 3rd in the table. Next week, the Seasiders are at home to Newent, who have made an impressive start to their season.
