13 tries in win over a plucky Coney Hill side
Match report from Chris Heath
With a seventeen and an eighteen year old making their first team debuts in starting lock Callum Kingscott and replacement wing Benbobson Fondu, Weston travelled to Gloucester without some of their more seasoned players who have fallen foul to this season's club injury jinx. However what was witnessed in the next eighty minutes was nothing short of exceptional fifteen man rugby. Straight from the kick off left wing Matt Watkins set off on a powerful run which resulted in a penalty which centre Glenn Dickson dispatched with aplomb. The hosts restarted and found themselves near the Weston line but Weston stole the ball and a delightful chip and gather by Dickson led to flanker Rich Bignell and outside centre Chris Young putting Watkins away on a blistering run which ended with the in form winger crossing wide out. Watkins then came in from the blindside on another run that nearly led to a score but for a sloppy pass. Weston stole the home lineout however and Dickson put Young in under the sticks. Dickson converted and repeated the act when Watkins full back George Chapman and lock Bryan Webb combined to put Bignell over. Fly half Dan Lomax who was in imperious form then got in on the act with another long range effort in which he produced outrageous dummies on his way to scoring. Dickson again converted as he did with Youngs second and A score for Webb. Lomax then crossed for a second time as Coney Hills defence crumbled. The biggest smile of the day came when Fondu was introduced in the thirtieth minute and when Young fed the winger just outside the visitors twenty metre area the debutant went on a mazy seventy metre run to the line to score with his first touch at first team level. Dickson converted all these scores to push Weston over fifty points before half time. Coney Hill did cross the Weston line on the stroke of half time and they also did on the stroke of full time but in between there were further scores for prop Rich Ford number eight Paul Morrissey who also had a fine game all round as well as right wing Mitch Salisbury a second for Watkins and a throughly deserved hat trick for Young whose distribution and decision making all afternoon was of the highest quality. Dickson converted one more before leaving it to Lomax to convert the final three tries. This was an outstanding performance against an admittedly struggling side but it was a performance which will give hope for the future with Kingscott also having a fine game on debut.
