Match report by Chris Heath

In a match which turned into a thrilling derby, Weston eventually came out on top in a game which had everything.

It was nip and tuck all through the first half but Weston took the lead in the twentieth minute through a Dan Lomax penalty and that was how it stood until half time but only after right wing Oliver Caton made a try saving tackle in the final play of the forty.

If the first half was a war of attrition then the second half was as exciting a half as you could wish to see.

Bridgwater received the kick off and went straight down the other end through some weak defending for their right wing Devitt to score to put the hosts in front however the conversion was missed. Devitt appeared to have scored again soon after but luckily the referee had both eyes on the situation and noticed that the winger had knocked on in contact with Weston full back Ross Bennett unlike the Bridgwater supporters who had a fifty percent deficiency in that area.

Weston hit back immediately when replacement Rich Ford went on a bullocking run which allowed Lomax to put in a fine grubba kick for centre Kirk Middlemiss to pounce and score. Lomax hit a superb kick from wide out to conversion. Lomax then added a penalty but the lead was short lived as Bridgwater centre Rob Gurnett scored with a fine individual effort and this was converted by Devitt.

Weston started to dominate up front but as is often usual in this division their dominance in the scrum was negated by the official despite the Bridgwater hooker often being seen to stand up waving to his friends in the crowd as their pack was marched backwards.

Westons second half dominance eventually paid dividends when from a scrum that was allowed to progress Number eight Paul Morrissey broke blind and sent Scrum half Hayden Tuttiett away. Tuttiett who had a fine all round game broke a tackle and dived in to the corner. Lomax expertly converted to put Weston six points up.

Bridgwater tried to hit back and when a blatantly long loose forward pass was this time missed by the referee Bridgwater found themselves in the Weston red zone where for the last ten minutes it was akin to Rourkes Drift with Weston holding out against wave after wave of Bridgwater attacks. Middlemiss took a team yellow but the hosts could not penetrate the stoic Weston defence who eventually held the ball up in a maul long enough for the official to end the proceedings to the delight of the visiting hordes.

This Saturday Weston host Newent in a rearranged league fixture kick off 2.30pm.
