Hard fought victory for Weston

In a disappointing and scrappy affair, the Seasiders managed to secure an important away win and keep alive a slim chance of a promotion play off spot.

Wells, who after a difficult couple of months have themselves caught up in the battle to avoid relegation, cam up by far the stronger side and despite playing up the considerable slope, deservedly took the lead through a converted try and their lead was increased on twenty minutes when young fly half White, who delivered a mature performance throughout, added a further penalty to give the home side a 10 points to nil lead.

This seemed to wake the away pack up and after a series of sustained drives, Wells pulled down an advancing maul, and the referee awarded a penalty try , which Dickson converted. In the final minute of the first half, Weston finally produced some continuity between forwards and backs, two quick off loads and when the ball was spread wide full back Chris Young outstripped the final defender to go in at the corner, which Dickson duly converted to give Weston a 14 points to 10 half time lead.

Early in the second half, White reduced the deficit to a single point with a further penalty, and whilst the standard of rugby didnt improve significantly, the intensity of the match certainly did.

However Weston began to influence the game more with strong running from the pack and their midfield of Kirk Middlemiss and Huw Morgan, and were put in good positions with some excellent tactical kicking from fly half Dan Lomax.

With ten minutes to go Paul Morrissey picked up from a dominant scrum, and surged over, with Lomax adding the extras, the scoreline was increased to 21-13.

Weston went in search of a much needed fourth try and a bonus point. but after a mistake in their own 22, Wells recycled the ball and their most dangerous runner, Stonier crossed with the last play of game to secure a losing bonus point for the home side.

Despite securing an away win, against a combative Wells side, this was a disappointing display from Weston, which never reached the heights of recent performances.
