Frustrating day for Weston

Weston retained their unbeaten record and secured another bonus point win but will have been disappointed by their stodgy performance and their failure to dominate a determined midsomer side who are bottom of the table.
On a bright and warm afternoon it was Midsomer who started the game with more energy and they pressed the Weston defence hard. Weston woke up after 10 minutes and made quick progress up the field. After several phases Weston had worked their way well into Midsomer territory when James Mackay found his path to the backs blocked and instead he made a neat break and scored a good individual try. The strong breeze prevented his conversion attempt.
Midsomer were not put off their stride by this and attacked determinedly. A penalty allowed them to win a line out near the Weston line and their bulky forwards drove relentlessly with their loose ad prop eventually on hand to force his way over for the equalising try.
Weston then had their best passage of play and for 20 minutes or so truly looked the part of league champions. The forward worked well and recycled ball well and the backs proved to fast and skilful for Midsomer. Morgan was put into space and scored a fine try. MacKay’s conversion attempt hit the upright. Almost from the restart Weston were putting pressure on again and this time it was Marcus Nel who finished a great move with a try near the posts. Mackay converted.
Within minutes Webb was very unlucky not to get on the end of a Mackay cross field kick and a scoring opportunity just went begging.
On 30 minutes Mackay created a small space and his neat pass to the impressive yopuing open side flanker Billy Kirk saw him sprint through and make a 55 metre dash to score under the posts. Mackay converted the bonus point try.
Weston continued to open up the Midsomer defence and Chris Young made a great break to score what he thought would be his birthday try but he was caught just short of the line. He offloaded neatly to Bennett in support and Mackay converted on the stroke of half time to give Weston a commanding 31-5 lead which earlier in the half had looked unlikely.
The second half was a disappointment dominated by reset scrums and scrappy play. Midsomer scored a try after 15 minutes which was a carbon copy of their first half effort and Weston wing Chris Young did get his celebratory try after 24 minutes when he finished the best bit of flowing play in the half and following a searing break by centre Nel.
Weston were deserved winners but will be their own sternest critics as this was a below par performance. They will however take pleasure from the performance of the players brought into the side in particular Callum Kingscott who stole a number of Midsomer line out balls, and Billy Kirk who tackled extremely well and scored his first try for the first team. They will also be looking to re-establish their dominant play as they seek to retain the unbeaten record this season with three league games and a cup final left to play.
