Weston overcome strong start from visitors Thornbury with free flowing performance

Weston registered their 24th league game this season without defeat and the double over SW1W opponents Thornbury.
Weston’s line up included three of their younger players who have played most of their rugby in the United this season and the large home crowd might have been tempted to think that these changes were partially responsible for Weston’s indifferent start as the visitors forced their way into Weston’s territory and after good work from their forwards Tarling crossed for a try converted by fly half Glew with less than 3 minutes on the clock. However all the players put in a great shift on the day and the players who came into the side were fully instrumental in effecting this high quality victory.
The visitors were certainly proving quite a handful and despite a penalty from James Mackay Weston trailed until a scintillating move from Weston’s backs which opened up the Thornbury defence and which resulted in a try by Robbie Mackay. Weston’s slender lead was turned over as Thornbury’s pack drove at the Weston line and from a short range penalty they score their second try from hooker Evans.
Weston might have been shaken by this early onslaught but they quickly established an attacking pattern which was just too fast and skilful for their opponents and they ran in three tries in 15 minutes. Fly half James MacKay cut through the defence to score two excellent tries which he converted and Hayden Tuttiett was on hand in support to break through for the bonus point try, again converted by James MacKay on 34 minutes. The half closed with two successful penalty attempts from Mackay and the first half ended with Weston firmly in control and with a 35 to 14 lead.
The second half opened with the Weston players in full cry but an early interception allowed Thornbury to pull back a score despite an extraordinary chase down and tackle from replacement full back Harry Jones, Thornbury were able to support and they scored a try against the run of play by hooker Evans. This may have caused a frisson of anxiety amongst the large crowd of home supporters but Weston were confident in their plan and clinical in their execution and they completely dominated the second half. Five second half tries were scored from Robbie Mackay, his second of the game; Callum Kingscott, who finished an excellent passage of play; Huw Morgan, who had cut through Thornbury’s defence on a number of occasions; a marvellous move finished by Harry Jones; and a final effort finished by Hayden Tuttiett but which the pack might wish to claim credit for. The whole back line was extremely effective and although he didn’t get on the score sheet much of the credit needs to go to Marcus Nel whose work at inside centre was of the highest class.
Mackay converted three of these 5 second half tries to bring his personal tally on the day to 31 points and in the process helping the team pass 1000 league points this season.
This fine return to form brings the mouth-watering prospect of a wonderful finish to a wonderful season with just two league games and a cup final to complete.
