Weston turn in a fine performance ahead of Thursday evening's County cup final

Weston travelled to Gloucestershire to face a Matson side which had a number of recent victories which has seen them challenge for third sport, and a reputation for a robust and confrontational approach to their game.
Weston’s game plan was to take the initiative and this they did from the kick off but Matson defended well for the opening 10 minutes. However Weston’s rapid transition from forward drive to wide back move opened up their defence and Tuttiett was on hand to finish a move, scoring in the corner. The conversion was missed as was a penalty attempt by Lomax just a couple of minutes later. Weston were however taking control and following great work from Weston’s second rows Chesher and Kingscott a driving maul, expertly steered by stand in skipper Dave Bird moved inexorably to the try line and with Matson infringing as Chesher drove for the line the visiting ref from Doncaster had no choice but to award a penalty try converted by Chris Young on for Tuttiett who had sustained a blow to the thigh.
Further good work from Weston’s pack delivered quick ball worked wide by the backs and allowing Robbie MacKay to score having rounded the defence and giving Lomax an easy conversion.
Weston were in full flow and after a number of attacks had been thwarted by Matson’s solid tackling they simply ran out of cover and MacKay scored his second to secure the bonus point and with Lomax’s conversion Weston had a commanding 26 – 0 half time lead.
Weston were immediately on the attack at the start of the second half and quick ball from third phase possession allowed full back Harry Jones to carve through to score under the posts. Lomax got the extras.
Some determined and energetic Matson play allowed their winger to break free. He showed significant pace as he streaked away to score a try which was converted.
This galvanised Weston who scored four tries in a 21 minute spell. Robbie MacKay completed his hat trick; Matt Watkins scored a brace and Morgan carved through for a great try as Weston’s backs took full control. Weston looked to be about to run up a very big score as they led by 61 to 7. A couple of minor injuries resulted in some reorganisation of Weston’s pack and back line and the team took their foot off the gas allowing a gutsy Matson team to score two late tries and bring the final score to 19 – 61.

Weston will be pleased to have retained their unbeaten record and to have compiled their second 60+ score in two weeks but will be disappointed by what they ill regard as a late defensive lapse.

None of the injuries appear to be too serious and Weston will be pleased with coming through this potentially difficult encounter with all players intact prior to the cup final next Thursday.
