Weston turn in much improved performance to overcome Chard

Weston travelled to Chard for this rearranged match hoping to extend their winning run and further increase their lead over second placed Clevedon.
Chard began in very determined fashion and kept possession for a number of phases but Weston’s defence was very secure and they earned a turnover after 5 minutes, they ran several phases through the forwards and then span the ball to the right wing where full back Chris Young was on hand to cut through the remaining defenders and run round towards the posts before touching down Weston’s first try which James Mackay converted.
The Chard forwards continued to compete very well but their backs let them down with some loose passing and poor handling. Weston were able to turn over possession again and ran well towards the Chard line. Superb support play saw Weston’s scrum half Tuttiett on hand to take a neat short pass and cross for Weston second try near the posts. Mackay’s second conversion gave Weston a 0-14 lead after 20 minutes.
Weston backs fielded a long kick and looked well placed to mount a rapid counterattack when a pass was intercepted by a lingering Chard forward who off loaded to Johnson who was at full tilt and he evaded the despairing attempted tackle to score in the corner. The conversion was missed.
Weston dominated play for most of the rest of the half and after a series of forward drives Weston skipper Sam Coles was on hand to cross near the posts. Mackay converted and there were no further scores before the ref blew for half time with Weston 5-21 in front.
In the second half Chard’s forwards continued to make a great contest of the forward battle but Weston’s backs were fast and clinical in their attacks. After just 6 minutes the forwards set up several phases and then the ball was moved quickly to the left wing where Matt Watkins was on hand to put the finishing gloss and touch down for Weston’s bonus point try. Mackay’s attempted conversion was just wide but his next kick from hand pinned Chard back in the 22. Weston regained possession and the forwards drove for the line. Tuttiett snapped up the score as he darted over for his second try of the afternoon and Mackay converted. Weston looked to be in complete control with the score at 5-33.
Almost from the restart Weston attacked again and moved the ball to the right wing where Robbie Mackay was on hand to touch down Weston’s sixth try.
Chard redoubled their efforts and kept the ball in their forwards and snuffed out any chance of Weston cutting loose. Weston’s defence held all Chard’s efforts and with Weston clearing their lines the ref blew for no side.
This bonus point victory against a spirited performance by Chard, whose forwards were much improved, opens up a 26 point lead in SW1W. Weston need just 5 more points to be certain of finishing as champions. They will be hoping to equal a long standing record number of successive wins when they face Drybrook away next week.
