Weston gain first bonus point win and move up to 7th place

Weston turned in a great performance against the visitors from west Cornwall, Camborne as they registered their first bonus point win of the season.
The visitors were out of the blocks the faster and they applied intense pressure for over twenty minutes when Weston could hardly get their hand on the ball. The home side defended stoutly but on 26 minutes, and after a dozen or more phases Camborne’s outside centre found a gap and went through for a try. The try was converted and Weston knew they were up against it.
For the remainder of the half Weston managed to get on the front foot and their scrum began to put intense pressure on in the set piece. Weston also won good line out ball from Camborne’s throw in and they were able to exert good pressure of their own.
On 35 minutes Hayden Tuttiett was on hand to touch down after a huge drive by the Weston forwards from a scrum that started 10 metres from the Camborne line. Mackay got the extras and then in the dying moments of the first half he slotted a difficult chance against the increasing breeze and Weston turned round 10 – 7 up.
The second half saw Weston gain much more possession and with the wind at their backs the put pressure on the visitors defence. From a long kick Robbie Mackay chased down the defending receiver and bundled him into touch. From the line out Weston caught the ball and drove for the line and skipper Sam Coles was credited with the touch down earned by the whole pack. Another push over try cake beckons for after training on Tuesday. Mackay got the extras and less than 3 minutes later Weston attacked down the middle and then worked the ball very quickly to the left wing where Matt Watkins got round his man through the smallest of gaps and sprinted for the line. Mackay’s touchline conversion put Weston comfortably in front by 24-7 and this was soon extended when Mackay hit his second penalty from 40 metres and Weston looked to be in control.
Camborne came back well and with just over ten minutes left on the clock they scored a try through continued forward effort and with the conversion made they were adrift by thirteen points.
Weston were, however running the ball wide and stretching the Camborne defence and they might have scored three tries as they worked the ball to the wings. One particularly good movement saw then work the ball first to the left and then right across the field to the right wing where full back Chris Young was on hand to score in the corner for the bonus point. The conversion attempt fell just short.
Weston were disappointed to allow Camborne a consolation try in the fourth minute of injury time but ran out deserved winners by 32-19.
This win moves Weston up to 7th place just a couple of points away from the top four.
