Disappointing day at the office

Weston will be very disappointed by their performance in a game against a team one place above them in SW Premier played in strong winds and pouring rain.
From the kick-off Weston attacked with speed and flair. The won the ball at the kick off, recycled it rapidly through three phases and spun the ball wide where second row Mark Turton was on hand to take the final pass and score wide out on the left wing. James Mackay’s conversion attempt into the wind fell just short.
Weston continued to attack and came close to scoring three times as the backs sliced through the Cleve defence and found space around the edges. Sadly they were not able to close things out and their final execution was poor.
This seemed to sap Weston's energy and dominance and Cleve clawed their way back into the game. They kicked a penalty from 35 metres and almost from the restart a defensive lapse and a succession of incomplete tackles allowed Cleve to breach Weston's line. The try was converted and Cleve were in front by 10 – 5.
Weston continued to make mistakes under pressure from Cleve's line speed and poor execution gifted two tries to Cleve's left wing. A second penalty had allowed Cleve to take a 27-5 half time lead.
James Mackay picked up an injury just before half time which ended his contribution to the game. Glenn Dickson took his place for his first game for Weston for some time.
With the wind at their backs Weston should have been able to gain ground but their execution was still lacklustre and some of their decisions did not take advantage of the driving wind and rain.
Weston did attack for most of the half and worked the ball through several phases and a slick move allowed Marcus Nel to touch down at the posts. Dickson converted and Weston should then have been able to take control. Cleve gave away a number of penalties, and had two players yellow carded in rapid succession but Weston simply could not get sufficient control or accuracy to make inroads into the Cleve score and at full time Weston had fallen well short.
This was not the sort of performance that the coaches and players know that they are capable of and they will need to play with much more accuracy when they face league leaders Dings next week at the Rec.
