League leaders Dings were the visitors in today’s South West Premier clash and they arrived as unbeaten league leaders.
The opening exchanges were very even and Weston’s defence was rock solid and very disciplined. They gave little ground and conceded no penalties despite not having any meaningful possession.
When Weston did get the ball they attacked well and it really looked as though Weston's backs could breach the Dings defence if they got enough chances.
The score was 0-0 after 35 minutes and Weston can be pleased with holding out the undisputed league leaders for this long but eventually the pressure told and they conceded a penalty which was converted. Despite the home side’s attempt to regain momentum it was Dings who forced a second penalty which resulted in another 3 points and a yellow for full back Chris Young who “ took one for the team”.
In time added on Dings scored in the corner and although the try was disputed for the scorer putting a foot in touch and a forward pass the score was allowed and the teams turned round with the home side trailing by 0-11.
Weston started the second half with much the better of the play. They carried well, looked after the ball and kept possession through numerous phases. Their sole reward was a penalty kicked by Dickson to pull back to 3-11, but their enterprising energy deserved more.
Despite having their best period of play it was Dings who regained momentum and they scored an unconverted try to extend their lead.
Weston were dismayed when playing from advantage signalled by the ref they worked the ball wide for Watkins to cross for a try which was subsequently disallowed, and Weston were forced to settle for a put in at a scrum when they felt that they had done enough to score and be within striking range.
In the dying moments of the game Dings strength, pressure and determination allowed them to cross for two further tries and they ran out deserved winners by a rather flattering score line of 3-30.
There were many positives in the performance of the home side. They never looked to be far from keeping pace with the league leaders and kept their penalty count low but in the end the visitors had just too much clinical resource available to them.
