Weston falter in bid for safety
Weston 31-34 Ivybridge
Weston took an early lead in this return encounter when after early pressure the backs were released and Dickson carved through for the opening try near the posts. James Mackay converted an Weston had a 7 point advantage after just four minutes.
Optimism turned to gloom when in a 6 minute spell Ivybridge left wing Charlie Bryant found space three times scoring a rapid hat trick each of his tries were converted by Mitch Pinkus and Ivybridge held a commanding lead with less than 15 minutes on the clock.
Despite Weston’s plans for this sort of attack the home side were under extreme pressure. They responded well and a try from a series of forward drives was touched down by Tom Crossman and with the conversion made Weston were just 7 behind.
Pinks punished an error at the breakdown, despite Ivybridge have a player in the bin for persistent infringement, and his penalty goal widened the gap. In time added on, with Ivybridge again down to 14 men with a back row player in the bin, Weston worked several phases and Robbie Mackay dotted down in the corner. The sides turned round with Weston adrift by five points.
Weston had hoped to shore up their defence and improve their attack but a kick for touch was charged down and Ivybridge scored their fifth try which was converted.
Weston built pressure but conceded another penalty kicked by Pinkus and were 15 points behind with just over 20 minutes remaining.
A huge effort from all 15 Weston players brought a try from a forward drive touched down by Ash Russell. The conversion was narrowly missed. Weston kept the pressure on and twice turned down relatively easy penalty shots in favour of kicks to touch. The last of these resulted in another forward try, touched down by Dave Bird. This was converted and Weston were just three points behind. Late pressure broke down as Weston pressed in time added on and Ivybridge were able to scramble the ball away to touch as time ran out.
Weston will be hugely disappointed to have missed an opportunity to gain five points and had to settle for 2 points as they registered a losing bonus and a try bonus point. They will also feel that they threw a lifeline to sides below them and although they remain in 9th place they are still to secure a place above the relegation zone.
