Brace each for Maslen and Mackay secures bonus point win

Weston’s start to this game was not as they would have planned as new scrum half Kadin Brocks, who has been playing very well, pulled a muscle during the warm up. He did start but was clearly in trouble, and not moving fluently.
Nevertheless Weston attacked strongly from the off. They worked the ball into Camborne territory and the forwards made progress into the 22. Brocks spun the ball wide and a slick movement gave space out wide and Robbie Mackay was on hand to finish the move with a great try. Brother James, back after a five month lay off with injury, slotted the conversion with just 10 minutes gone.
Weston then had to reorganise as Brocks was unable to continue. James MacKay moved to scrum half and Dickson came off the bench earlier than planned, to play at fly half.
Camborne pressed hard through their forwards but Weston’s defence was secure and they won turn over ball. The Weston forwards moved towards the half way line then Mackay and Dickson unleashed the backs, Marcus Nel carved through the defence and put Maslen into space and he made no mistake scoring Weston’s second try under the posts. Dickson took on the kicking duties and converted. Weston looked as though they might cruise through the game but Camborne had other ideas. They used their hefty forwards in a simple but effective play, driving the maul close to Weston’s line. A defensive error by the rearranged Weston back line allowed the visitors to score a simple try. The extras were missed. 10 minutes later and Camborne repeated the trick, driving into the Weston 22 and slipping the ball to their best back, the right wing whose strong running and neat footwork put him over in the corner. Again the conversion went begging but Camborne had pulled themselves back into contention at 14-10.
Weston regrouped, regained momentum and following quickly recycled ball the backs sliced open the Camborne defence and Mackay streaked away for his second try of the afternoon,. The conversion from Dickson gave Weston a 19-10 half time lead.
Camborne raised their game after the break and pushed the Weston defence hard. They were awarded a penalty and the kick closed the Weston lead to just six points. Again Weston regained momentum and from first phase possession Dickson cut a superb line and ran clear of Camborne’s defenders to score in the corner. He converted his own try and Weston had opened a comfortable gap.
Camborne were still dangerous and they used their tried and tested method of a driving maul from a line out to press hard. They used the tactic twice and eventually their heavier pack crossed the line for the side’s third try which was converted. The last 15 minutes might have been tense but the visitors efforts seemed to sap their energy and Weston’s forwards easily dominated at the set piece. The pressure they exerted brought a penalty kicked by Dickson. Weston almost scored a pushover try close to full time but Camborne scrambled and disrupted the final dive for the line. Weston were not to be denied and twice more the backs came within a whisker of scoring before a final sweeping move saw the neatest of inside passes to Maslen who crossed for his second, and Weston’s fifth try of the afternoon. The conversion went begging but the game moved into injury time with Weston well in front and firmly in control.
Although this performance was more patchy and less clinical than in the game at Maidenhead, Weston were still worthy victors 34-20 and this bonus point win, with some other results in SW Premier being helpful sees them move to 9th in the table and within striking distance of 7th place.
