Weston extend winning run to four in a row but by a narrow margin

Weston picked up their fourth consecutive win and just got over the line in a very tense match between two sides who used different but well matched game plans.
Weston looked to move the ball wide and stretch the Cleve defence whilst the visitors used their larger forwards to great effect with rolling mauls.
Weston opened the scoring after 3 minutes with a James MacKay penalty. This was matched six minutes later by Cleve. Mackay then missed an easier penalty chance but Weston moved ahead with a well worked try when Morgan came into the line from the wrong wing and an interchange of passes by Robbie Mackay and wing Howman and it was Howman who touched down in the corner. Mackay made the difficult conversion.
Cleve came back with a try after their forwards set up a rolling maul and then spun the ball to the right wing where they touched down,. The conversion went begging. Cleve scored again from a rolling maul following a lineout and the sides turned round with Weston trailing 10-13.
Right from the start of the second Weston ran the ball wide and Morgan crossed on the right wing and with the conversion missed and the home side took a narrow lead. Mackay then kicked two penalties earned from intense pressure and Weston moved 8 points in front. With the Cleve hooker in the bin for repetitive offside infringements Weston pressed hard towards the right wing then span the abll and an overlap could have seen any of three Weston backs score but it was Robbie MacKay who crossed for Weston’s third try. The conversion was missed. Weston’s backs threatened to score on a number of occasions but good defensive work kept them out.
Cleve upped their game. They used their rolling maul to good effect to cross for two tries. One in the corner which was unconverted and a second close to the posts which brought them within a single point. Astonishingly the conversion attempt went just wide and Weston managed to keep control as the game moved into injury time and the home side held out for a narrow win which they just about deserved against an abrasive and well drilled Cleve outfit.
