Weston get a draw but let a win slip away

Weston produced a much improved performance this week but will be left considering what might have been as they surrendered a 13 point lead.
The opening quarter of the game was a very tight affair with both sides having opportunities to score and both defences tested and found up to the task.
After 21 minutes Weston were awarded a penalty slotted by James Mackay and this proved to be the only score of the half as the two sides’ attacks were thwarted by great tackling and stern rear-guard defence.
Weston were confident that they could open up the Exmouth defence but it was an Exmouth error that gave them a chance. A poor clearance was fielded by Weston who attacked in the middle of the park and then moved the ball to the right where a sharp interchange of passes gave a chance for Nel to cross and touch down. The conversion was narrowly missed. Weston were on the attack again within just a couple of minutes and this time quick ball was moved to the left where Watkins had just enough space and pace to cross for Weston's second try. The conversion attempt fell just short but Weston were 13 nil up and looking as if they might take control.
Exmouth were awarded a penalty for a breakdown infringement and their fly half made no mistake as he trimmed Weston's lead.
A questionable decision by the referee allowed Exmouth to force two errors and the visitors rumbled a rolling maul and crossed for a try wide out. It was a day of missed kicks and there were no extras.
Weston had a chance to widen their lead twice with penalty kicks which the normally reliable James Mackay might have expected to kick but it wasn’t his day.
Exmouth won a penalty and rolled a maul from the lineout 10 metres out, crossing for their second try which was unconverted, to level the scores. They attacked with huge energy and with McDowall taking a yellow for the team with a tackle from offside Exmouth had two chances to kick a penalty goal and nick the game but missed both.
The last 8 minutes or so were very tense with neither side wanting to give away a chance and eventually the ref blew for no-side and a drawn game.
Results elsewhere in the league ran in favour of both sides but both home and away kickers may yet rue missed opportunities.
