Match report by Tony Russell

Weston duly completed the double over basement club Maidenhead, scoring seven tries in the process although it was much more competitive than the 90-5 result achieved at home back in September.
The hosts opened the scoring after four minutes with a penalty from fly half Virgo for their only score of the match, but the visitors responded five minutes later when centre Smee collected Mackays’ exquisite chip without breaking his stride to open the WSM account. Mackay converted. Ten minutes later, excellent handling by the backs created space for right wing Marco Oupuh who brushed past the cover defence for a fine try.
Maidenhead then enjoyed their best period, pressuring the Weston line but unable to cross in spite of the fact that Sparks had been yellow carded, to be followed four minutes later by a home forward. Referee Sarah Cox immediately restored the home numerical advantage when visiting prop forward Hobbs was also invited to take a ten minute rest, but on the stroke of half time, the Weston six pushed the home seven over their line for Swann to touch down. Mackay converted to bring up a 19-3 half time scoreline.
The lead was increased by three points a minute into the second half with a Mackay penalty, and on 54 minutes, another forward surge created space for a converted try for scrum-half Dan Waldon. Flanker George Sparks was next on the scoreboard with a pushover try by the pack after 62 minutes as the home side started to wilt, once again converted to increase the lead to 36-3, and this was increased seven minutes later when second row Ash Russell crashed over following his own catch at the line out. The seventh try came in the 75th. minute courtesy of centre Sylvan Edwards to complete the scoring.
There were only 4 Maidenhead names recognisable from the side of two years ago, and therein lies their problem. It’s difficult, even at this level, to be competitive using Academy (albeit Wasps) youngsters and Mark Mueller can’t go on for ever. One hopes that they can survive. It’s a sociable club to with a charming committee and friendly people. There are far worse places to be!!!
