Weston continued their recent improved form with a third consecutive win, this time over third placed Bracknell at Lily Hill Park.

The early portents were not good. Weston elected to play up the slope and into the wind, but with the team apparently still in the changing room, the home side scored after only two minutes from a standard backs movement, and again three minutes later when their nippy little scrum half was allowed to run in untouched from seventy meters for a fine individual score, and the visitors yet to touch the ball. Fortunately neither try was converted, a malaise that was to cost the home team dearly.

Weston gradually worked their way into the game and after twenty five minutes, a concerted forward drive freed up good ball for the backs, and centre Ollie Snook went in on the overlap for a try converted from the touchline by Glen Dickson. The same player repeated the operation seven minutes later after Middlemiss had picked a fine line to break the defence for Dickson to once again convert, and a 14-10 lead which became 17-10 on the stroke of half time with a Dickson penalty.

Bracknell scored first two minutes after the resumption. Weston, obviously still dwelling in the changing room, lost possession near the opponents’ line and a sweeping move resulted in a try for Owen, once again unconverted but they had trimmed the gap to 17-15.
However the visitors began to exert dominance over the home forwards, who had stood up unexpectedly well in the first half, but now started to creak. They mounted a concerted attack, this time keeping control of the ball for hooker Mike Hocking to sell the obligatory dummy and storm over from ten meters for his first try for the club. Dickson converted….24-15. The forwards struck again fifteen minutes later. Sam Fisher, son of Weston stalwart Andy Fisher, and making a fine debut on the front row, splintered the defence with a barnstorming run to put Sparks in for a simple try, once again converted for a 31-15 lead.

Bracknell responded with a try after 69 minutes to close the gap by five points, but five minutes later, excellent interplay between backs and forwards created the chance for Richard Webster to cross untouched. Inevitably Dickson converted for a comfortable 38-22 lead.
True to form, Weston thought the match was over and allowed a last minute, but thoroughly deserved consolation try from their scrum half.

A vastly improved performance by all players against a side that had only lost once at home, as Weston seek to climb the table, albeit at the eleventh hour.

On Saturday they entertain first placed Redingensians at the Recreation Ground. Please note kick off is 3.00 p.m.
