Sometimes size matters

In the second match of this triangular Weston were once again made to look rather short by some boys who are at the moment rather larger than average.

Such was the disparity in size up front that the scrum was a walkover for Yatton as were many of the rucks and mauls. Their physical presence was too much for Westons much smaller outfit with some shying away from tackling players twice their size who were repeatedly fed the ball to punch holes in their defence.

I have to confess to having some sympathy for our team as Yatton played to their strengths mercilessly.

However Weston who were at times unfortunate with some decisions which went against them still have players who hesitate when the ball is loose allowing their opponents to secure easy ball and counter attack and do not give a good account of themselves in contact.

I think the first point can be interpreted as a lack of knowledge which can be addressed. The second tackling is a mixture of courage and technique.

That being said there were positives, the handling under so much pressure was good and the performance of Jamie Meaden who seemed to be at the heart of every breakdown, again Matthew James tackled well and worked relentlessly in the loose for his team. He thoroughly deserved his try which came about because he reacted first to the ball bobbling about on the floor.

Dylan Way and Alfie Calcutt ran well from the backs. But it was an almost impossible task for Weston's players to pressurise Yatton when they saw so little of the ball.
