Weston just came up a little short in their final festival encounter against what is arguably the strongest team in their area.

Weston's small and tired squad finished the Rising Stars Festival with a defeat but can only take heart having made this talented Winscombe side work for every single point and every single yard.

Weston began well and on top as they took the game to Winscombe. The forwards knocked Winscombe back several times as they pressed and it was no more than they deserved when Alfie Calcutt seized on the gap to score.

If Weston held a small advantage up front then it was Winscombe who clearly were moving the ball better in the open. Weston tackled well all over the park in defence of then their line, but following a penalty for not rolling away from a tackle they did not form a defensive line and Winscombe seized on the space to equalise in the left corner.

Winscombe doubled their lead as just for once tackles were missed in the midfield but they were unfortunate as it appeared the ball was dropped over the line.

Turning round and with the slope Winscombe were totally dominant, but what a defensive performance as a tired set of players held them at bay. Edward Land a try saving tackle, several times players held the ball up on or over the line and then won the 5m scrum.

Inevitably a little bit of luck made the game safe as a several Winscombe supporters saw a forward pass put there player through. Throughout all of this Hobbes Gaulton worked his socks off making half breaks and although Alfie Calcutt was often on his shoulder Weston were not quite able to get the ball out to their flanks.

Winscombe ran in a final try with a really well worked move and they thoroughly deserved their victory.
