The Malcolm Hughes Memorial Game
Weston U15s 7 Pontypridd U15s 41
Pontypridd outscored the Weston hosts by seven tries to one with the visitors having led 12-mil at the break.
Weston U15s faced their counterparts from Pontypridd in the Malcolm Hughes Memorial game. There was a minute’s silence before the game and a trophy presentation afterwards.
Born in 1947, Malcolm lived most of his life in Pontypridd in the village of Cilfyndd but sadly passed away in 20233 leaving his beloved wife Sheila, three children and grandchildren.
His wider family includes one of Weston U15’s players and one of their coaches.
Malcolm’s son Darrell ’the whippet’ Hughes made over 160 appearances for Pontypridd, and Pontypridd’s U15s now coach Phil Davies made over 250 appearances for Cilfynydd, showing the love for rugby in this Welsh town.
Rugby was one of Malcolm’s many loves, but his main love was his family. Malcolm worked hard throughout his life, starting as a miner.
This is where he would have used the values we teach today in rugby TREDS: teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline, and sportsmanship.
Malcolm enjoyed travelling abroad or in the UK and spent lots of time in the family caravan in nearby Brean.
Malcolm is sadly missed, and our condolences and thoughts go to his family and friends.
