Weston United returned to winning ways as they ran in seven tries in the Counties 2 Somerset match against Wells with wing Hayden Main claiming four tries, prop Charlie Owens two and replacement Tom Blyth also crossing the whitewash. Fly-half Archie Tilsley added six conversions.

The match was switched to one of the back pitches after referee Bert Semple ruled that there was too much surface water on the main pitch. A one-minute silence was held before the start in memory of former Club President Rod Crocker who passed away on Thursday.

The sides were tied at 26-26 at the break having both secured a try-scoring bonus point. Second-row Luke Dunham opened the scoring for Wells, the try converted by fly-half Joe Wedmore, but Weston United hit back quickly with Main crossing in the left corner.

Wells extended their lead with tries from Ewan Blair and No.8 Mike Dimaline, the second converted by Wedmore, for a 19-5 lead with only 15 minutes on the clock. Two more tries from Main, both converted by Tilsley, again levelled the scores.

Loosehead prop Sean Hegarty claimed Wells' bonus-point try, converted by Wedmore, but Owens powered over the line from close range for Weston United's fourth. Tilsley added the extras on the stroke of half-time.

Main, already with a hat-trick to his credit, crossed for his fourth try early in the second half, Tilsley converted and then added the extras to Owens' second touchdown.

Weston United were in the mood for more tries with Blyth the next to cross the whitewash and Tilsley's conversion giving the host a commanding 47-26 lead but there were still 30 minutes to play.

Into the final quarter, Wells reduced the deficit with a try from loosehead prop Russell Jordan, converted by Wedmore. They tested the Weston United defence but were unable to reduce the arrears any further.

After hearing of the passing of former Weston-super-Mare RFC president Rod Crocker, NMA Electrical kindly donated a bottle of port to the former players association.
