Having gained promotion as unbeaten champions last season, Weston-super-Mare’s senior squad has been preparing for the next set of challenges when the new season starts for them on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
With the Weston 1stXV, under captain Tom Sugg, back in Regional 1 Tribute South West, the Club are looking to ensure they have sufficient depth within its squad through retention and recruitment to cover any availability or injury issues.
The players have been holding ‘voluntary’ weekly training sessions during June, but they move to twice-weekly sessions starting tonight (Thursday, July 2), under the watchful eyes of coaches Darren Crompton, Charlie Brabham, Jon Bamsey and Marcus Nel.
“The numbers at the voluntary sessions during June have been very encouraging, around forty-plus, and that includes several of last season’s Colts who are looking to make their senior debuts this season,” said Weston’s director of rugby, Mark Matthews.
“With an enhanced coaching team for this season, we are looking to develop our strengths, particularly around the squad approach and inclusivity that we created last season - this really encourages numbers at training.
"With a strong Athletic putting pressure on the United and ultimately the 1stXV. There has been a lot of discussion during the off-season around training blocks and skills in attack and defence.”
Matthews added, “The coaches will be looking to get the best from the players, encourage the initiative shown, and work hard on the weaker elements. Fitness was a key area last season, and we’re looking forward to Gary Moore returning and providing the encouragement in this area.”
“We have also made a number of strategic signings to build the teams, not replace them, as the skills and camaraderie exist to provide what I think will be a competitive and enjoyable season for all involved.”

The Club is eager to narrow the gap in the league pyramid between the 1stXV and the United, who play in Counties 3 Tribute Ale Somerset South, and between the Athletic, who will play in Counties 4 Tribute Ale Somerset South league.
Chris Young has been appointed captain of Weston United for the coming season, having played over 200 games for both the 1stXV and United, while Rich Bishop will continue to lead Weston Athletic, having played 75 games for the side.
