Funeral details updated

It is with deep regret that we have been informed of the passing of former Club Captain Peter Payne on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

Peter celebrated his 100th birthday on January 18, 2024 and was featured in the matchday programme for the Regional 1 South West game against Devonport Services.

Peter marked this year’s birthday in a slightly quieter fashion than he did his 90th when he completed a sky-drive in May that year.

He thought it was a way to make his big day unforgettable while helping others, as he raised money for Cancer Research UK (CRUK).

The occasion was all the more poignant following the death of close friend and fellow CRUK supporter, Derek Chapman.

Peter, a retired BT engineer, said back in 2014: “This is something that I have wanted to do all my life, ever since static line training off a tower in 1944.

“As a past deputy chair of the local Cancer Research fundraising committee and as a very good friend of the recently dearly departed Derek and Yvonne Chapman, who founded the committee, I want to raise at least £1,000.”

Peter made his senior debut for the Weston-super-Mare 1stXV during the 1949/50 season, he was Club Captain for the 1953/54 campaign and went on to make around 100 first-team appearances for the Seasiders.

The funeral will be held at Weston Crematorium, Ebdon Road, Weston-super-Mare, BS22 9NY on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at 1.30 pm followed by the Wake at Worlebury Golf Club, Monks Hill Worlebury, Weston Super Mare, BS22 9SX.

RIP Peter
