Weston crash out at the death !!
Weston u15's welcomed highly rated Nailsea & Backwell to the Rec for the second round of the Somerset cup, and despite Weston never being behind until the dying minutes , it was N&B who stole the tie from under the noses of the hosts.
With the two sides evenly matched it was Weston who scored first , with Eddie Davies , starting on the wing , showing he'd lost none of his pace and power with a fine try wide out , Archie Tilsley adding a fine conversion , 7-0 WsM.
With Weston bossing the early scrums against a huge N&B pack , the lead was doubled when powerful number 8 Tom Hughes crossed , Tilsley again converting well , 14-0.WsM . N&B though are a good , well organised side and as well as some giants in the forwards their main threat lay in their backs , and soon they were on the scoresheet for a h/t score of WsM14 N&B 5.
The second half started well for Weston and after some good phases and ball retention Hughes piled over for his second , Tilsley added the extras for a score of 21-5 . Nailsea, however were far from finished . As Weston's error count began to grow , so did N&B 's confidence and soon 21-5 became 21-10 , soon after that, following some non tackling in the Weston midfield a N&B attacker strolled through untouched , 21-17 WsM.
N&B could now feel a real comeback on the cards . With the clock down to 2 minutes Weston narrowly missed a penalty goal to put them 7 points in front.Unfortunately Weston were slow to react as the visitors ran the ball from behind the posts and even slower to react to a wayward hoof upfield and an alert chasing N&B player watched the ball sit up perfectly to gather and sprint in from 65metres for a converted try under the posts. WsM 21 N&B 24 final score.
Weston will be bitterly disappointed with the result , particularly after surrendering a 16 point lead , but too many times wrong options were taken , overlaps were ignored ,they repeatedly failed to clear their lines and generally making things difficult for themselves. Credit though to Nailsea they are a fine side who never gave up . For Weston, cousins Jimmy and George Bamsey worked tirelessly and along with Tom Hughes were the pick of the pack , outside saw a welcome return for Eddie Davies who was a threat all game .
