Cup win for the Under 15's

Match report by Kenny Braidwood

WSM RFC v Wells RFC in Bristol Junior Combination Cup Under 15's

Seven tries from six Weston players saw them progress into the next round of the Bristol Combination Cup competition with a hard fought victory over Wells RFC.

Wells started the game the strongest and were quickly on the score board with a penalty from the first breakdown of the game. In a game were the score ebbed and flowed Weston were the next to score. Mateuloh Abed got hold of the ball after Wells cleared from their own lineout and he romped up the right wing to touch the ball down. Lewis Paterson scored the conversion.

Wells responded with a try from a line out on the Weston 22 meter line. The conversion was missed. Weston's scrum worked well throughout the match and from a scrum on the Wells 22 meter line Dom Marshall scored with a typically strong run. The conversion was scored. Wells responded with a try but the conversion was missed. The final score of the first half went to Harry Strutt out on the left wing with a darting run through the Wells defence following a Weston penalty. Lewis Paterson made the extras.

Half time Weston - Super - Mare RFC 21 - 13 Wells RFC

An eventful second half started with Wells driving over the Weston line and securing the additional two points. After some midfield sparring Weston came back with the ball being well worked across the back line for Kyron Pearce to get across the whitewash. The conversion was missed.

Weston then went down to 13 men after Toby Maleham was shown a yellow card for a late tackle. Wells scored from the ensuing penalty. Shortly afterwards with 14 man Weston making progress up the pitch Kyron Pearce was the next to fall foul of the referee who penalised him for playing the player on the ground in the ruck. This gave Wells the upper hand and with Weston trying to clear the ball from their own 10 meter line a missed pass was seized upon by Wells for them to score. The conversion was scored. Weston defended well and saw out being down to 13 without allowing Wells any more opportunities to score.

With Weston back up to full strength they soon took the upper hand and scored 19 points in the last twelve minutes to secure the win. Good pressure via the forwards allowed Lewis Paterson to pick up the ball and break through a number of tackles to score. The conversion was missed. Jack Press then went on to score with a mazy run through midfield. The conversion was scored. Lewis Paterson scored Weston's final try as well as the conversion.

This was a hard fought but deserved win for Weston where the whole team had to dig deep to keep Wells at bay especially when they were two men short in the second half. Man of the match went to Billy Howells for his all round performance as hooker where he was instrumental in securing the ball in the scrum and the lineout with his well taken throws.
