Tense morning of rugby played with great competitive spirit

With a number of players out today it gave Weston's new players the opportunity to play a full game against our local rivals Nailsea and Backwell in what turned out to be highly competitive game right to the end.

First on the score board was Brooklyn Chamberlain who drove over the line with his magnificent strength. Lewis Paterson added the extras. A period of play followed which saw Weston defending their own 22. A few penalties went to Weston allowing Nailsea to score and convert a try. Score 7-7.

From the next kick off, Weston defended well resulting in a fantastic run down half the pitch by Mateuloh Abed to add to the score. Try was converted. An interception from a Weston pass allowed Nailsea and Backwell to score their second try which was converted. Next on the Weston score board was Dom Marshall, Lewis Paterson converted making score at half time 21-14.

The second half of the game was equally a tense affair. From a Nailsea and Backwell line out in their 22, Billy Howell's fine work at the breakdown allowed Jay Ewens to surge through the Nailsea and Backwell players to drive over the line to score his debut try for Weston. Conversion missed and Weston lead of 26-14.

The action continued with Lewis Paterson making a fantastic run down the length of the pitch only to be tackled into touch.
Another penalty to Weston gave them their final score of the day with a try from andrew turner under the posts. This was converted by Lewis Paterson – score 33-14.

The final minutes saw some very good defensive work from the Weston players, in particular some very strong tackling by David Clamp. Nailsea and Backwell nearly scored but a try saving tackling from George Morton-Bool kept them out allowing Rueben Picardo
to hoof the ball clear from 5 metres out sending the players down to the Nailsea and Backwell 22 once more.

The tense game continued with a further two unconverted tries from Nailsea and Backwell. With the score at 33-24 and two minutes to go it was unlikely that either team would score. However a poor kick off from Weston allowed Nailsea and Backwell to storm down the pitch and add a final 5 points to the score board.

The final kick off the game was a tense affair but Weston continued their defensive work to the bitter end making the final score 33-29.

Nailsea and Backwell are always a good team to play and there was a lot of great spirt and sportsmanship from both sides.
Howards Citroen Player of the match went to Brooklyn Chamberlain.
