U15's narrowly lose battle in the cup

Weston Under 15's travelled to Coombe Down for only their second fixture of the season in the Bristol Combination Cup. A long journey to start the season and a convoy of 8 cars journeyed up for the game with a squad of 22.

The team have again acquired new players and kept most from last season and go into this season with a squad of 26 with 4 of those currently out through long term injury.

Having arrived and agreed an 11.30am kick off to beat the tiredness of an early start and long journey, Weston started well and provided good ruck ball for scrum half Jamie Smith to get out to the backs. They were thwarted a number of times by Coombe Downs defence which led to the home team going in front. Weston were then 12-0 in quick succession due to a number of errors by this woke them in to action and got a try back through George Pengelly Powell who picked and went from a ruck after good pressure and running from Tom Davison.

Weston again conceded just before half time and went in at half time 15-7 down but with the opportunity to play downhill in the 2nd half.

The wind and soft conditions under foot as well as great pressure by the Coombe Down defence led to another try by Coombe Down but again Weston came back and scored a try through full back Tom Davison after a quick tap penalty near the line. Weston pushed and pushed but again conceded another try in the corner to be losing 25-12 with 8 minutes to go. Weston had their opportunities and were unlucky not to get a few calls made differently but were rewarded by scoring just before the end by Leon Sabastonelli.

With only 2 games gone, the team are gelling slowly and must learn to just play their own game and concentrate on what they are doing and take in to training what they learn and then also learn from their mistakes or experiences.

Weston will now play Chew Valley away on Sunday before a training session the following Sunday then playing Nailsea and Backwell RFC in the Bristol Combination Cup Preliminary Plate Fixture.
